Current Year (FY2009 Enacted)
More About Current Year Treemap
What is shown here?
The data displayed above includes all the IT investments for fiscal year 2009. The entire IT portfolio is divided into different types of categories. The size of each category is determined by the total number of dollars represented by the budgets of every investment included in that category. The treemap includes both major and non-major investments.
What is a treemap?
According to the University of Maryland, where Ben Shneiderman designed the first treemap: "Treemap is a space-constrained visualization of hierarchical structures. It is very effective in showing attributes of leaf nodes using size and color coding. Treemap enables users to compare nodes and sub-trees even at varying depth in the tree, and help them spot patterns and exceptions."
Total IT Spending:
This is an agency's total spending on information and technology investments. This is the figure reported on agency Exhibits 53 as enacted spending for the current fiscal year (2009).
% Change in IT Spending:
This is the % change in enacted spending from the previous fiscal year to the current fiscal year (FY2008 to FY2009).
New/Upgrades Spending:
Program costs for new investments, changes or modifications to existing systems. (Described as "Development/Modernization/Enhancement" or "DME" on Exhibit 53.)
Maintenance Spending:
Spending covering maintenance and operation costs at current performance level for existing systems. (Described as "Steady State" on Exhibit 53.)
Size:
Choose what variable determines the size of each rectangle. By default, this is "Total IT Spending," resulting in larger areas for categories which include more dollars.
Change:
Choose what variable determines the color of each rectangle. By default, color varies by the rate of change in dollars by percentage from the previous year.
Color:
By clicking on the color swatches to the left and right of the gradient, you can select which colors represent the extremes of your selected color scale. By changing the numbers next to the color swatches, you can input the most extreme values for the purposes of coloring.
Rollover Box:
The box which appears when you roll your mouse cursor over the treemap includes statistics which describe the lower level of rectangles. This box also indicates what categories are described by the shapes under your cursor.
